How to Register for a USCF-Rated Tournament

April 14, 2026Tournament BasicsBeginners

Registering for a tournament is straightforward once you know the steps. The process varies slightly depending on the event and the platform the organizer uses, but the core requirements are consistent across USCF-rated events in the United States.

Step 1: Confirm Your USCF Membership

All players in USCF-rated events must have an active USCF membership. Before registering for any event, verify that your membership is current at uschess.org. Memberships are annual and expire on the last day of the month of your join date.

If your membership has lapsed, renew it before registering. Expired memberships can sometimes be renewed on-site at the tournament, but not all organizers accommodate this, and it can delay check-in.

If you've never had a USCF membership, you can join at uschess.org. Membership tiers include:

  • Adult membership (age 25+): Standard annual rate
  • Young Adult membership (ages 19–24): Reduced rate
  • Scholastic membership (ages 18 and under): Further reduced rate
  • Family membership: Covers multiple household members

Your USCF membership number is what identifies you across all rated events and is required for registration on most platforms.

Step 2: Find the Tournament Announcement

Most tournament announcements include all of the information you need to register:

  • Date and location (venue name, address, city/state)
  • Entry fee (often tiered by rating or age; may include a discount for early registration)
  • Sections (rating ranges for each section, e.g., Open, Under 1800, Under 1400, Unrated)
  • Time control (G/90 d30, G/30 d5, etc.)
  • Number of rounds
  • Registration deadline (advance vs. on-site registration)
  • Contact/registration link or platform

If any of this information is missing from the listing, contact the organizer directly before assuming.

Step 3: Register Through the Organizer's Platform

Most tournaments use one of a handful of registration platforms. The most common in the United States:

US Chess (uschess.org): Many USCF-affiliated events are registered through the official US Chess website. Log in with your USCF credentials, find the event, and follow the registration flow.

King Registration (kingregistration.com): A widely used independent platform for chess tournament registration. You create an account, link your USCF number, and register with a credit card or PayPal.

ChessRegister: Another independent platform used by some organizers for online entry and payment.

Direct contact: Some smaller clubs and state associations handle registration by email or phone, with payment by check or at the door. The tournament announcement will specify this.

Step 4: Select Your Section

If the tournament has multiple sections, you'll be asked to choose one. Your selection is typically constrained by your USCF rating:

  • Open section: Open to all players regardless of rating
  • Under [rating] sections: You must have a rating below the cap. Example: the "Under 1400" section requires a USCF regular rating of 1399 or below.
  • Unrated section: For players who have no established USCF rating or are playing their first rated events

Some tournaments allow players to "play up" (enter a higher section than their rating would normally require). Playing down is generally not permitted.

Step 5: Pay the Entry Fee

Entry fees are typically paid at the time of registration. Most platforms accept credit/debit cards. Some organizers offer a discounted "pre-registration" rate if you register before a specified deadline, with a higher "at the door" rate for late or on-site registration.

If you pre-register but can't attend, most organizers have a withdrawal policy — check the tournament announcement for refund or credit terms.

On-Site Registration

Many tournaments accept walk-in entries on the day of the event, up until the first round begins. Bring your USCF membership card or have your membership number available, be prepared to pay the full entry fee, and arrive early — on-site check-in can move slowly right before a round starts.

After Registration

Once registered, you should receive a confirmation from the platform or organizer. Bring this confirmation (or just your name and USCF number) to check-in on the day of the event. Check the tournament website or announcement for any pre-round logistics — parking, venue access, equipment rules, and the specific schedule for the day.
